Itinerary
Owned by many powerful and influential figures and with links to monarchs from Henry I to Charles II, the atmospheric ruins of Kenilworth Castle have witnessed 900 years of English history. From the country’s longest ever siege to grand medieval tournaments and spectacular royal entertainments, there are so many stories to share.
On this tour we will discover them all as we circle the castle walls and enjoy spectacular views of the ruins, both the impregnable medieval fortifications and the later aristocratic palace. We will focus particularly on perhaps the castle’s most famous episode – the visits of Queen Elizabeth I to stay with her friend, courtier and would-be suitor, Robert Dudley, events immortalised in Sir Walter Scott’s novel “Kenilworth”. Dudley rebuilt the castle to welcome his Queen and the lavish festivities cost him a fortune. They give us a great insight into the life of the Tudor court.
There are few places where you get such a feeling for the country’s past as this wonderfully evocative castle set in lovely English countryside. I look forward to sharing the many wonderful tales of Kenilworth with you.
