Itinerary
Few Irish cities can match the timeless appeal or the architectural grandeur of Kilkenny. The city is home to one of Ireland's largest and best-preserved castles, is famous for its red Smithwicks ale, and likewise for its legions of cats who - tradition would have us believe - once saved the city from a night-time attack by raising the alarm loudly on the city walls as an enemy stealthily approached.
On our 60 minute tour around this charming town we'll visit Ireland's oldest private residence (a townhouse called Rothe House, dating from the 1500's, and still in its original form today). We'll view one of the few remaining Tholsel buildings in the country, and we'll visit the home of Alice Kyteler - Ireland's most notorious witch - who saw off four wealthy husbands, inheriting their fortunes - and in the end eluded death at the stake as well, escaping to a secret hideaway in the remote West of the country.
Briefly the capital of Ireland in the 1640's, Kilkenny is today a thriving market town, famous for its ales, its annual comedy festival (the 'Cat's Laughs') as well as its all-conquering Hurling team. Follow me to the 'Marble City'!
Kilkenny hosts a week-long celebration in honor of St. Patrick's Day. This tour is a great way to learn and celebrate with locals!
