Itinerary
"Le Marais" is one of the oldest and most cosmopolitan districts in the French capital city, which used to be a swampy area drained by Christian congregations and became then an aristocratic neighborhood in the late Middle Ages. The King of France lived there once at what became afterward the Place des Vosges, where many noble private mansions were built in the 17th century across "Le Marais". After the French Revolution of 1789, from the 19th to the 20th century, stately homes were turned into artisanal workshops such as clothing manufactures or goldsmithery/silversmithery shops, so the local population was replaced by a Parisian working class.
At that time, the Jewish Quarter was extended all along Rue des Rosiers, then in the 1980-1990's a lot of homosexual establishments opened in this neighborhood. Today, "Le Marais" is a must-see place in Paris full of trendy boutiques, bakeries, cafés, gastronomic restaurants, museums, art galleries, ravishing gardens, magnificent historical monuments, etc.
